All ines were planted in 1999 with the exception of Syrah; which was planted in 2007. The Cabernet Sauvignon is in its 14th Leaf. All mountain vineyards planted in solid limestone. Mountain Valley Vineyard is dark river bottom soil with limestone boulders 3 feet down. First vintage was in 2002 with all crops handpicked. The vines that make up Cerro Prieto Vineyard were carefully planted according to the 13 microclimates, and later readjusted through grafting so that the most suitable varietal was planted in the most favorable area. All clones were grafted onto 1103p Rootstock, phylloxera resistant. All blocs have 5 x 10 feet spacing, except bloc 4b, at 5 x 12 feet. 95% of vines are pruned to 2.5 tons/acre; 5% are pruned to 1 ton/acre. The vineyard is drip irrigated from a 160 gallon per minute well with a 20hp pump (air lift compression test was 400gpm). The well is located between blocs 3a and 4, in the Mountain Valley Vineyard. The annual grape production totals approximately 38 tons.
The grape varietals are described as follows:
Cabernet Sauvignon-5.5 Acres: The Cabernet Sauvignon is Block 4b & 5.
Pinot Noir-3.45 Acres: The Pinot Noir was grafted over in 2007. The Pinot Noir is Block 3 & 4a.
Syrah-2.85 Acres: The Syrah is carved out limestone rock in semicircular arc, facing SW, and terraced in a stair step fashion.
The Syrah is Block 6.
Sauvignon Blanc-2.05 Acres: The Sauvignon Blanc was grafted over in 2007. The Sauvignon Blanc is Block 3 & 4a.
Merlot-1.15 Acres: The Merlot was grafted over in 2004. The Merlot is Block 4b.
An additional 26.6 acres of forested and pre-terraced land is part of the 41+ acre parcel, which includes multiple farm roads and several stunning potential home sites, with views up to 35 miles. Of the pre-terraced land, there is an additional 5 unplanted acres of South/Southwest facing terraced hillside with water and power adjacent. An additional 7-8 acres in mountain valley could be planted to cold weather grapes.

91 pts Byington 2004 Cerro Prieto Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles):
"I like this wine for the way it mimics Napa cult Cab, yet carves out a distinct identity. Like Napa, it's dry, soft, and ripely opulent, with rich blackberry, cassis, cherry, cocoa, and oak flavors, housed in sweet, finely ground tannins. Yet there's an earthy, tobacco and sassafras quality that suggests real terroir." -- Steve Heimoff
